Dog Helps Friend Escape Child Gate Wins Pet of the Week

This week we saw how a dog that was abandoned at the shelter now has a happy life with a new family and a dog who took a fridge magnet seriously.

In addition to viral videos and animal stories, we’ve also been working on our weekly Pet of the Week lineup featuring reader-submitted videos and photos.

If you want your furry friend to be Pet of the Week, follow the instructions at the end of this story.

Winners

Sharon Monell

This week’s winners are two Yorkshire terriers from New Jersey, Bella and Marlee. Owner Sharon Monell shared a heartwarming video of them playing with their safety gate.

The clip shows Monell’s young puppy, Bella, helping her older dog open the gate.

Monell explained that Bella was isolated because she was still a puppy, while older Marlee clearly felt like she was missing out on the action. Bella wanted in on the fun and helped by opening the gate.

“The little one went over the rainbow bridge in March, but I just thought this video was so cute. I love everything about them. They’re my babies,” Monell said Newsweekas he looks back at the moving video.

Finalists

Peter Zheutlin

Our first finalist this week is Tot, an Australian Shepherd rescued by his owner Peter Zheutlin.

“(She is) our fourth rescue out of Louisiana,” Zheutlin said Newsweek“We adopted her when she was about 6 months old.”

Also an author, Zheutlin is passionate about pet adoption. In 2017, he published the book Rescued: What Dogs Given Second Chances Teach Us About Living a Meaningful Life, Loving Through Abandonment, and Finding Joy in the Little Thingswith short stories and lessons from families who have rescued dogs.

Pepper the dog

Theresa Richardson

Our next finalist this week is Pepper, a shih tzu who lives with his owner Theresa Richardson.

Pepper originally belonged to a friend of Richardson’s daughter who was a police lieutenant. In 2014, when the officer was away on business and her regular dog sitter was unavailable, Richardson’s daughter offered her mother’s services. Richardson had often looked after her daughter’s dog, so it was a natural choice.

When Pepper’s owner planned to move to the other side of the country, Richardson took him in and he has lived there ever since.

“He was 11 at the time. Before I took him to a shelter, they asked if I wanted him permanently,” Richardson said Newsweek. “I’ve had him ever since. He’s 14 now, healthy, smart and extremely spoiled.”

Henry the cat
Henry was once a feral animal, but now he is living the best life of his life.

Leslie Honcharik

Finally, this week we have Henry, a feral cat who now lives a happy life with his owner Leslie Honcharik.

“It was a feral cat that I fed every day for two years,” Honcharik said Newsweek“(I) was eventually able to catch him and bring him inside.”

With much love and patience, Henry has transformed over time from a shy stray cat into a loving indoor cat who now spends a lot of time with his owner.

“(He) has become a big love bug. He lives the life of a king,” the owner said. “Here he is on his favorite pillow, living the good life he deserves.”
