Potential rivals join key Biden delegates, but Manchin remains an outlier

Topline

Several top Democratic leaders seen as potential challengers for the party’s presidential nomination endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, a candidacy the party appeared to quickly rally behind and become her nominee after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race on Sunday.

Key Facts

California Governor Gavin Newsom, who had been seen as a leading candidate to replace Biden, threw his support behind his longtime ally Harris, saying: “No one is better positioned to prosecute the case against Donald Trump’s dark vision and lead our country in a healthier direction.”

Another leading candidate, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, also publicly endorsed Harris, calling her a “patriot worthy of our support” and urging other members of the party to “quickly unite” behind her and “refocus on winning the presidency.”

Colorado Governor Jared Polis said Americans want a “new generation of leaders to lead us into the future” and added that he is “excited to support” Harris’ candidacy.

Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., whose name was recently mentioned as a possible outsider replacement for Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket, also voiced his support for Harris, calling her the “right person to defeat Donald Trump and lead our country into the future.”

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, another leading candidate, has yet to publicly endorse Harris, but Politico reported that she participated in a phone call with Harris on Sunday and expressed her support for the vice presidential nomination.

Harris is also said to have received support from current and former Democratic National Convention delegates and leaders of influential Democratic congressional groups.

News Pin

Sen. Joe Manchin, I-W.Va., who called on Biden to resign on Sunday, has emerged as a potential wild card in the Democratic race, as he has yet to endorse Harris over anyone else. Multiple reports suggest that the West Virginia Democrat, who is retiring from the Senate this year and has been a frequent target of progressives, is considering re-registering as a Democrat and entering the presidential race. In addition to calling on Biden to resign, Manchin also advocated for an “open process” to select Biden’s replacement in his interview with CNN on Sunday. However, in the same interview, Manchin floated the names of Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro as potential Biden replacements.

Crucial quote

In a statement to political reporter Ben Jacobs about a possible Manchin run, West Virginia Democratic Party Chairman Mike Pushkin pointed to the senator’s previous comments about a second Trump presidency destroying democracy. “I have confidence that, regardless of the path he chooses, he will remain committed to defeating Donald Trump… It is important to recognize the significant early support and endorsements that Vice President Kamala Harris has already garnered for the Democratic nomination,” he added.

What to look out for

Manchin will appear on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Monday with Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky and Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina — two names that have emerged as potential running mates for Harris if she secures the nomination.

Large number

$46.7 million. The amount the Democratic fundraising platform has raised from small donors since Harris announced her candidacy on Sunday.
