Oklahoma Democratic Party Chairman Pledges Support for Harris

After President Biden decided to withdraw from the presidential race on Sunday, Democratic leaders rallied behind the party’s presumptive new nominee, Kamala Harris.

In Oklahoma, Democratic Party Chair Alicia Andrews said she is prepared to continue supporting Biden, but will now also back Harris.

“I believe the party was divided on the ‘who,’ we’ve never been divided on the ‘what,'” Andrews said. “And the ‘what’ is saving our democracy.”

Pressure for Biden to withdraw from the race grew after his debate performance against former President Trump, the first of the election. The DNC now faces a rush to select a running mate for Harris and confirm the two on its ticket during a virtual meeting in the first week of August to meet Ohio’s voting deadline.

“What I think is true about Vice President Harris is that she has a track record to run on, unlike anyone who has run for vice president in a very, very long time,” said State Rep. Monroe Nichols, a Democrat from Tulsa. “So I expect her to have a great deal of success on the campaign trail.”

Andrews asked state donors to support Harris as the new presumptive nominee and to reunite as a party.

Potential VP candidates vary. Among the possible names mentioned by political strategists is Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who will attend a fundraiser in Oklahoma in August.
