Live Updates: Biden Drops Out of 2024 Presidential Race, Endorses Kamala Harris

Donald Trump leaves the stage after a campaign rally on July 20 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Donald Trump was joined on Saturday by his new running mate, Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio, at the former president’s first campaign rally since the attempted assassination of him last week.

The two were greeted by a raucous crowd at an indoor arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

This is what happened:

New running mate: Vance, who whipped up the crowd ahead of Trump’s remarks, said, “I have to be honest, it’s still a little weird seeing my name on those signs,” referring to Trump and Vance’s campaign materials fluttering in the crowd behind him.

Vance defended his loyalty to the US after Vice President Kamala Harris said he “will only be loyal to Trump, not to our country.”

Before becoming vice president, Harris served as San Francisco’s district attorney, California’s attorney general and then the state’s junior senator.

Vance returned later to introduce Trump to a rapturous audience.

About the shooting at the rally: Trump, wearing a smaller, beige bandage around his ear, said he “took a bullet for democracy.”

The former president, who spoke for nearly two hours, thanked the staff at Butler Memorial Hospital, where he was taken minutes after the shooting at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Rep. Ronny Jackson, the former White House physician, said Saturday that Trump is “recovering as expected” from a gunshot wound to his ear. Investigations into the rally shooter and the handling of security at the event continue.

Trump indicated in his first joint interview with Vance that people at his rally last weekend noticed someone standing on the roof before the assassination attempt.

Musk’s support: Trump said he spoke with tech billionaire Elon Musk before coming to the Grand Rapids rally. The former president said Musk failed to mention that The Wall Street Journal had reported he would spend about $45 million a month on a pro-Trump super PAC.

About world leaders: Trump said that Chinese President Xi Jinping and other world leaders wrote to him after the assassination attempt. He said he “got along very well with President Xi, who is a great guy,” and claimed he also worked well with other world leaders, even though they understood during his presidency that “the game was up” when it came to exploiting the U.S. on a global stage.

Biden campaign response: President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign strongly criticized Trump’s comments at the rally, saying Trump was “only focused on himself.”

“He is spreading the same lies, waging the same campaign of revenge and retaliation, promoting the same failed policies, and — as usual — is focused only on himself. The only unity we saw today was between Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, and their Project 2025 agenda,” Biden campaign spokesman Ammar Moussa said in a statement.

Project 2025 refers to the policy plan drafted by a conservative think tank. Democrats have latched onto some of the document’s controversial right-wing proposals, while Trump has tried to distance himself from the platform, despite dozens of people from his former administration having a hand in its creation.
