Who would Kamala Harris choose for vice president if she wins the Democratic nomination?

As Vice President Kamala Harris kicks off her 2024 presidential campaign after President Joe Biden decided to abandon his re-election bid, predictions are swirling about Harris’s potential running mates.

ABC News’ chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl offered his take on some possible candidates for a Harris ticket in November.

Gretchen Whitmer

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is an attorney, educator, and former prosecutor who has served the state since 2018.

Since taking the oath, she has signed executive orders to clean up Michigan’s drinking water, end discrimination in state government based on sexual orientation and gender identity, ensure equal pay for equal work and expand opportunities for small and underserved businesses, according to her congressional biography.

Josh Shapiro

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has served the state since 2023 and was previously elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2004. He represented the 153rd District until 2012.

Shapiro ran for Pennsylvania Attorney General in 2016 and was re-elected in 2020.

The governor gained national attention after the I-95 overpass collapsed in June 2023 as he pushed to reopen the highway in just two weeks.

Roy Kuiper

Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina is the state’s 75th governor and has served in the public sector since 1987.

According to Cooper, as governor, he “created tens of thousands of new jobs, fought for better public education, tackled the opioid crisis, revitalized rural communities, and ensured that North Carolinians get the education they need to fill the jobs of today and tomorrow,” according to his website.

Cooper previously served four terms as the state’s attorney general.

Phil Murphy

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has led the state since 2018, becoming the first Democratic governor to serve a second term in 44 years.

Since taking office, Murphy has championed a $15-an-hour minimum wage and expanded paid parental leave, according to his website.

The governor has led initiatives to offer free tuition to qualified students at public universities, and has embraced policies that have lowered health care costs and expanded protections for the state’s immigrant and LGBTQIA+ communities.

Murphy has introduced gun safety laws to combat gun violence and promote responsible gun ownership.

Andy Beshear

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear is currently serving his second term in office for the state, having been first elected in 2019.

According to his website, Beshear leads an “education-first administration” and is committed to “protecting public education and supporting teachers.”

He believes that affordable health care is a “human right” and as governor has expanded access to health care for nearly 100,000 Kentuckians by removing government barriers.

According to its website, Kentucky was one of eight states in 2022 to see a decline in drug overdose deaths.

Wes Moore

Maryland Governor Wes Moore has served the state since 2022, when he became the state’s first Black governor.

Previously, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan and was CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, New York City’s largest anti-poverty organization.

Moore gained national attention for his efforts to obtain full federal funding to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge after it collapsed in March.

According to his website, the governor has pardoned more than 175,000 convictions for possession of cannabis and paraphernalia.

JB Pritzker

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is serving his second term, after being elected in 2019 and again in 2022.

According to his website, he is known for his progressive reforms on health care, labor rights and climate change.

Pritzker is committed to reforming the criminal justice system, prioritizing mental health, according to his website.

Mark Kelly

Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, who has been in office since 2020, is a former Navy fighter pilot and NASA astronaut.

During his tenure, Kelly has advocated for military aid to Ukraine and Israel. According to his website, he serves on the Senate Defense Committee and the Joint Economic Committee.
