Anna Swan Wins Three Straight EDWGA Match Play Tournament Titles

Winning formal golf tournaments is nothing new for the Swan siblings from North East.

Nowadays, it is no longer new for them to beat older peers in match play finals.

Anna Swan, who is about to begin her college career at Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma, defeated recent Gannon University graduate Sarah White 3-1 in the final of the Erie District Women’s Golf Association Match Play Tournament on Sunday.

That result at Lawrence Park Golf Club marked the third straight year that Swan, a recent North East graduate and former PIAA gold medalist, has triumphed in the bracket format, beating out White, who has starred for the women’s golf programs at Mercyhurst Prep and Gannon University, from which she graduated earlier this year.

Sunday’s loss also leaves White without a win in his career at the EDWGA majors.

“The fact that Sarah just graduated and I’m going to college (next month) is crazy,” Anna Swan said. “I’ve been thinking about that and how we’re all growing up.”

“But honestly, it doesn’t matter who I play against, older or younger. I want to win, and competition is competition.”

Swan captured his third consecutive Match Play title less than two weeks after his younger brother Josiah Swan defeated Clarion University-bound Devon Lauer in the final of the EDGA Junior Match Play Tournament for 18-under-par boys at The Ridge Golf Club.

Josiah Swan is a student who will soon be entering eighth grade.

Sunday’s Match Play net flight final also featured the two highest-ranked players from that bracket. Gail Heubel won 1-up in her title duel against Chris Willey.

Looking for another sweep

Most of the weekend’s Match Play participants are expected back in Lawrence Park for the EDWGA Stroke Play Tournament. The 54-hole event takes place August 16-18.

Anna Swan can, as she did in 2023, sweep the EDWGA’s majors with a win that weekend. She provided disappointing news for fellow Stroke Play competitors who were hoping she would be on her way to Oral Roberts by then.

“Yes,” said Swan, “I’ll come back here.”
