PM Update: Some showers tonight, then a good chance of heavy rain on Monday

It could be a week or so before today’s heat levels are matched again. A stray shower or storm is expected this afternoon into the early hours of tomorrow. After that, our daily rain chances will peak at workweek levels.

We can expect a full inch of rain in some places by late tomorrow night. With cautious optimism, atmospheric data from more than one weather modeling system confirms this scenario.

See you tonight: A short shower or storm has a small chance of appearing in the morning hours. Clouds and humidity will build regardless. The coolest places can see 70 degrees, but many of us are dealing with low temperatures in the muggy mid-70s.

Tomorrow (Monday): The chance of rain is increasing, so the earliest commute has the relatively best chance of drought. Periodic waves of downpours and storms are almost always possible, but especially from late morning to night. The graph below illustrates that we have the lowest chance of downpours causing local flooding.

Some sunshine is possible, but that can make dew points feel more humid in the uncomfortable low to mid 70s. High temperatures will be limited to the low to mid 80s. Shortly before sunrise on Tuesday, when temperatures drop into the low to mid 70s, rain chances, amount, and intensity will decrease. Fog is also somewhat possible.

Rainfall forecasts and drought

Good news with our stalled front nearby. Rainfall over the next week should increase to respectable amounts. Much of what is included in this chart below will likely fall Thursday night, with perhaps a slight chance of rain into Friday.

While there is still a geographic pattern of less rainfall west of DC in the driest part of our region, the coming week will at least provide some relief. The Interstate 81 corridor and mountainous areas of our region, as you can see in this latest drought chart below, are experiencing the worst “D3” Extreme Drought. Rainfall this week will be crucial to preventing further water restrictions, which have begun west of the city.
