State Youth Baseball Review: Corsica/Stickney Baseball Wins Class B Youth State Title – Mitchell Republic

SALEM, SD — Corsica/Stickney rolled to six wins in three days to win the South Dakota Veterans of Foreign Wars Class B under-10 state basketball championship on Sunday.

Corsica/Stickney defeated Bon Homme 10-1 in the championship round.

Corsica/Stickney defeated Platte/Geddes 10-0 in their semi-final on Sunday, while Bon Homme defeated Lake Norden 5-4.

The Jaguars finished the tournament 6-0 with a 54-9 run differential, beating Lake Norden, Parker, Garretson and Scotland/Menno in the first two days of the tournament.

On Friday, 20 teams played matches on two fields in Salem and Montrose in five pools of four teams each, before all 20 teams advanced to a knockout pool on Saturday and Sunday.

Platte/Geddes took third place with an 11-1 victory over Lake Norden. Kimball/White Lake was the winner of the VFW sportsmanship award for the tournament.

Mitchell Avengers third at state tournament in Brandon

BRANDON, SD — The Mitchell Avengers 9-and-under baseball team had the best run of any Mitchell team at the South Dakota Class A baseball program’s youth state tournament this past weekend at Aspen Park, taking second place.

In pool play, the Avengers finished 3-0, with a 17-8 win over the Sioux Falls Hogs, a 23-5 win over Brandon Valley White and a 9-5 win over Brookings. That gave the Avengers the No. 2 seed in Sunday’s six-team playoff bracket and a bye to the semifinals, where they faced Spearfish. In the semifinals, Mitchell lost 8-3. Brandon Valley Black won the eventual bracket title with a 7-3 win over Spearfish.

In the 10-and-under division, the Mitchell Avengers finished pool play at 1-2, while the Mitchell Maize finished at 0-3. The Mitchell MadDogs were also 0-3 in their pool. Brandon Valley Black won the division title 11-1 over Capital City.

The 11U state tournament featured two Mitchell baseball teams. The MadDogs were 1-2 in their pool play games, while the Mitchell Sliders were 0-3. The 11U title was contested between Brandon Valley Black and Sioux Falls Boss’ Pizza on Sunday night at the deadline for this report.

In the 12-and-under division, Mitchell MadDogs Blue finished 1-2 in pool play, while the Mitchell MadDogs Yellow were 0-4 in their pool games. Brandon Valley Black won the 12U bracket title 5-4 over the Pierre Rattlers.
