NBA Insider Shares Golden State Warriors’ Low Offer for Lauri Markkanen

Whether the Golden State Warriors can pull off a successful transfer this summer will tell us a lot about the organization’s future.

The Warriors, who just missed the playoffs for the third time in five seasons, are at a crossroads. They lost four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks in NBA free agency. As it stands, this is not a championship-caliber team.

The background here is clear. Stephen Curry is entering the twilight of his career. Most thought that Golden State executives would want to make a deal that would help Curry compete as his career winds down.

Hence, the Warriors have been linked to Utah Jazz big man Lauri Markkanen in a near-endless loop. The 7-footer is reportedly on the trade list. Utah and Golden State have had conversations about him.

It makes sense. Markkanen would be an ideal fit for Golden State. He averaged 23.2 points and 8.2 rebounds on 40% shooting from three-pointers last season. Markkanen could form a dynamite duo with Curry.

Unfortunately for fans in Northern California, nothing has come of it yet. Danny Ainge, head of the Jazz front office, is seen as someone who is difficult to work with in trade negotiations. That has become a major point in the talks between the Jazz and the Warriors.

There has been much talk about young forward Jonathan Kuminga and rising guard Brandin Podziemski, with Utah reportedly choosing Podziemski over Kuminga to headline a blockbuster Markkanen trade.

But at this point, Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. has yet to offer either young player in talks with Ainge. Here’s what NBA insider Marc Stein wrote about trade talks.

“There’s also a growing belief around the league that the Warriors would be more willing to move Jonathan Kuminga in a Markkanen trade — or another big deal — than Podziemski. It should be noted, however, that Golden State’s offers for Markkanen have thus far focused on a package that includes Moses Moody and draft compensation that doesn’t include Podziemski or Kuminga,” report on Golden State Warriors trade offer for Lauri Markkanen.

Draft-focused offers have been the name of the game in the NBA lately. However, a reluctance to tender any of these young players may give us some insight into what the Warriors are thinking internally. They want to compete in the short term and remain viable in the long term.

That said, you’re not going to acquire a player of Markkanen’s caliber without giving up something of real substance. That’s the crux of the matter.
