Michelle Obama is seen as the “only person who can beat Donald Trump” after Joe Biden sensationally withdrew from his re-election campaign.

Biden, 81, has himself endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate in the race against Trump. However, online figures have thrown their support behind Obama, who served as first lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017.

Steven Bartlett, 31, an entrepreneur on Dragons’ Den (the British version of Shark Tank), previously supported Obama. He graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School and was a former associate dean of student services at the University of Chicago.

The celebrity’s message was echoed by others on X, that was Twitter, tonight, following Biden’s social media letter. It read: “While it was my intention to run for re-election, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and the country that I step down and focus solely on fulfilling the duties of my president for the remainder of my term.”

Minutes after the letter was posted by the 81-year-old politician, dozens of tweets praised Obama, 60, and called on her to throw her hat in the ring. Sen. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota had said this week: “I don’t think I would be revealing any secrets about the polls if I said that Michelle Obama would probably be the one person who could keep the party united and probably provide a little bit of a moving start because of her obvious fame.”

One woman tweeted tonight: “If they pick anyone other than Kamala Harris or Michelle Obama I will NOT be voting.” Another posted: “Michelle Obama… your country needs you… please throw your hat in the race for president… you can beat him and think your husband was the first black president and you can be the first black and a woman… an extraordinarily powerful couple.”

Another X user said: “Michelle Obama is the only one who can beat Trump.” Meanwhile, another shared on social media: “I think Michelle Obama is the only real contender who can beat Trump. She could motivate voters and the party and she has name recognition.”

But father of four Biden said online: “Today I want to give my full support and endorsement to Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and defeat Trump.”

Biden’s decision came as he isolates at his beachside home in Delaware after being diagnosed with COVID-19 last week, and talks about his political future with a shrinking circle of confidants and family members. Biden said he would address the nation later this week to provide “details” about his decision.

Senior campaign and White House officials were briefed minutes before the letter was sent, according to people familiar with the matter. Biden had been considering his future in recent days and the decision was being closely watched.
