Kiosk: Former UM footballer dies in tragic drowning

Former Michigan Wolverines player André Seldon died Saturday in a tragic drowning accident in a Utah reservoir, the school announced. The Belleville, Michigan, resident was 22.

According to the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, a search began Saturday afternoon after police received calls about an individual who dove off a cliff into the water at Porcupine Reservoir and did not resurface after the dive. His body was found around 9:05 p.m. Saturday.

“Our investigation leads us to conclude that this was a tragic accident as multiple witnesses provided similar information,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Seldon joined Utah State this offseason after transferring from New Mexico State, where he played the last two seasons under current Utah State interim coach Nate Dreiling.

“Our football program is devastated to lose one of our own,” Dreiling said in a statement. “I had a prior relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, and I can tell you what an incredible person and teammate he was. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss.”

Seldon was a four-star recruit out of Michigan State in the 2020 class and played in two games during his Michigan career. He helped Belleville to a 12-1 record in the state semifinals as a senior in 2019 after playing in a starting role for three seasons.

JJ McCarthy is out after going to the Minnesota Vikings in the draft, meaning Alex Orji, Davis Warren And Jack Tuttle will compete for the chance to replace him. That will almost certainly come up when Moore speaks this week.

Of course, Big Ten Media Days will also be a chance for Moore to lay out his vision for Michigan in 2024 and beyond. The expectations remain the same, though, and it will be interesting to see how he plans to handle McCarthy’s departure.
