Of Whirlwinds is coming out in theaters this weekend, so I thought it would be fun if you took a look back at the making of the original 1996 film Vortex.

Twister follows Dr. Jo Harding, a dedicated and fearless storm chaser, and her estranged husband, Bill Harding, who is also an experienced meteorologist.

The couple, on the verge of divorce, must join forces when an unprecedented series of powerful tornadoes threatens to devastate all of Oklahoma. Their mission is to deploy a revolutionary device called “Dorothy” that can collect vital data from the heart of a tornado, which could greatly improve the early warning system for extreme weather events.

As they race against time and the elements, Jo and Bill’s passion for their work rekindles their relationship, while they confront their personal demons and past traumas, which involve a tornado that devastated Jo’s family years earlier.

The film was directed by Jan de Bont and featured groundbreaking special effects for its time.
