Former New Mexico State cornerback Andre Seldon Jr. drowns in Utah

July 21—Andre Seldon Jr., a cornerback transfer from Utah State, drowned in Porcupine Reservoir in Cache County, Utah, the program announced Saturday. He was 22.

Seldon was a captain and two-year starter at New Mexico State the past two seasons, a key figure in the Aggies’ football revival. He initially spent the spring at TCU before ultimately deciding to play at Utah State this summer.

“Our football program is devastated by the loss of one of our own,” interim head coach and defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling said in a press release.

Dreiling coached Seldon the past two seasons at NMSU as defensive coordinator.

“I had a prior relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, and I can tell you what an incredible person and teammate he was. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we mourn this tremendous loss.”

“Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated by the sudden passing of Andre Seldon Jr.,” added Utah State Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau. “We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates and all who loved Andre.”

Seldon, a native of Belleville, Michigan, was rated a four-star prospect out of Belleville High School and spent the first two years of his college career at Michigan. He transferred to NMSU in January 2022 and started 28 games with the Aggies, compiling two interceptions and 98 tackles in two seasons.

Seldon played a crucial role in the program’s best run in recent history, with the Aggies compiling a 17-11 record with two bowl appearances, a run to the Conference USA Championship game and a stunning 31-10 upset of Auburn last season.

After former NMSU head coach Jerry Kill stepped down in December, Seldon went to TCU after entering the transfer portal. He spent the spring with the Horned Frogs before re-entering the portal to follow Dreiling, a former defensive coordinator at NMSU, to Utah State for his fifth season of college football.
