Harmful Bills Targeting LGBTQ Child Passes

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu has signed a series of discriminatory bills directly targeting our LGBTQ youth, specifically transgender children in the “Live Free or Die” state. These measures are not only a step backwards, but a direct attack on the rights and dignity of young people, creating division and perpetuating harm. Devon Chaffee, Executive Director of the ACLU of New Hampshire, said: “These unconstitutional bills — now signed into law — are cynical attacks on some of our state’s most vulnerable young people and will have devastating consequences for transgender and LGBTQ+ students who already face discrimination and isolation simply for being themselves. Our politicians continue to fail transgender youth: These laws are not really about fair sports, healthy classrooms, or overall well-being, but rather about imposing discriminatory attitudes and shutting transgender people out of public life. We condemn Governor Sununu’s signing of these bills and stand with transgender and LGBTQ+ Granite Staters and their families — we cannot and will not allow politicians to take away their rights.” Melanie Willingham-Jaggers, Executive Director of GLSEN, concluded: “Governor Sununu’s decision to sign a series of bills targeting LGBTQ+ youth is deeply misguided, especially on the eve of updated Title IX protections that specifically protect LGBTQ+ students from discriminatory school policies. The laws passed by Governor Sununu are designed to marginalize and stigmatize some of our most vulnerable children, denying them their basic right to a safe and supportive learning environment. This is a betrayal of New Hampshire’s values of freedom and fairness. To our LGBTQ+ youth in New Hampshire: we see you, we stand with you, and we will never stop fighting for your right to live authentically and without fear. These cruel policies will not go unchallenged.”
