    Offices: Windsor Heights

    Founded: 1920

    What we do: Commercial electrical distributor.

    Employees: 250

    About us: 3E has grown from being a purely electric motor shop to 11 shops across Iowa, supporting generators, electrical distribution, robot automation and solar projects.

    What we do: Funerals.

    About us: We were founded in a furniture store on Main Street in Ames and later moved into our permanent location, which was the home of Mary Greeley, founder of the Mary Greeley Medical Center.

    Agnew & Soseman Insurance Agency

    Offices: Holstein

    Founded: 1920

    What we do: Insurance.

    Employees: 3

    About us: Elizabeth Kistenmacher and her husband, David, are the third generation to own the agency, which was started by Kistenmacher’s grandmother, Mae Dusenberry Soseman.

    Ahlers & Cooney P.C.

    What we do: Public sector law firm.

    About us: In 1908, Grace Ballantyne, an associate at the firm, and founding partner William H. Baily represented women seeking to vote in a Des Moines election to approve a new City Hall. The Iowa Supreme Court ultimately voided the election because women as a class were barred from voting. Today, more than half of the firm’s attorneys are women, and 5/6ths of the leadership positions are held by women.

    What we do: Design and make custom equipment including planting, harvesting and seed processing systems and plot management technologies for the seed research industry.

    About us: Think about all the corn and soybean fields that you see when you drive through the Midwest. Each one of those fields is planted with seeds that were developed with the use of ALMACO seed research equipment.     About us: Mark Boeke says his great-grandfather, Henry Simon Boeke, became the first licensed embalmer in the family, passing his state board exam with a score of 84%, though his formal education ended with the fourth grade in Germany. Mark Boeke’s grandfather, father and he all have followed as licensed funeral directors, and the sixth generation, his daughter Emily, plans to join the firm this fall.

    What we do: Commercial printing and mailing service, including materials for local and national political campaigns.

    About us: Family owned, Carter may be the oldest remaining printing company in Des Moines.

    About us: CL Tel’s founders brought the first telephones to Clear Lake in 1878, just two years after Alexander Graham Bell patented the invention. Iowa’s first long-distance call was made in 1879 from Clear Lake. CL Tel was a founding member of an early statewide fiber optic network, built to ensure advanced technologies for rural Iowa communities.

    About us: Community State Bank was the first to open in Ankeny, originating the year before the town was incorporated. That was five years before Ankeny had electricity or a fire department and nearly 60 years before the town had home postal delivery.

    About us: Charles H. Weitz started the now-$1 billion firm as a small carpentry shop in what was then Fort Des Moines. Among its many projects: a $3 million addition to the Register and Tribune building in downtown Des Moines in 1947. The addition was erected around the existing facility so operations at the paper could continue during construction.

    What we do: Financial services. Wells-Fargo’s mortgage division is based in the Des Moines metro.

    Employees: 12,500 in Iowa

    About us: The Wells Fargo wagon was a familiar sight in cities throughout the country, including Mason City, the hometown of playwright and composer Meredith Willson. In 1957, Willson’s musical “The Music Man” opened on Broadway with the lively “Wells Fargo Wagon” song that celebrated the arrival of a wagon filled with exciting packages and band instruments for the people of River City.

    Woodford Lumber and Home Improvement

    Location: Clear Lake

    Founded: 1869

    Products/services: Lumber and building materials, hardware and home store, with professional design services.

    About us: Woodford Lumber and Home is Clear Lake’s oldest continuously operated business. It was established the same year the Golden Spike was hammered in as part of the transcontinental railroad.
