Tragedy strikes the football program

Utah State Defensive Back Dies in Accident

Utah State’s program was struck by tragedy after news broke Saturday night that cornerback Andre Seldon, Jr. had passed away.

The Utah State football program confirmed the tragic news of his passing via their “X” account.

Seldon Jr. was a four-star recruit in Michigan’s 2020 class who enrolled that winter. While in Ann Arbor, he earned a spot on the Big Ten’s All-Academic Team. He transferred to New Mexico State for the 2022 season. The former NMSU athlete recorded 96 tackles, 13 passes defensed, and two interceptions during his two seasons there. He then committed to transfer to TCU in January of that year. After spending the spring in Fort Worth, Seldon committed to transfer to Utah State in May.

He was only 22 years old when he died, reportedly by drowning while cliff diving at Porcupine Reservoir. Utah State officials confirmed the news of his untimely death. They released statements from interim head coach Nate Dreiling as follows:

“Our football program is heartbroken as we deal with the loss of one of our own,” said
interim head coach and defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling. “After a previous
relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you that he
an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family
as we mourn with them this tremendous loss.”

Dreiling was Seldon’s defensive coordinator at NMSU.

Additionally, Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau released a statement, as seen below:

“Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated by the sudden passing of Andre Seldon
Jr.,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau. “We are expanding our deepest
condolences and sincere condolences to his family, friends, teammates and all who loved him
André.”

Tragically, this accident comes just a year after a similar incident that resulted in the death of Oregon’s Spencer Webb. Like Webb, both athletes were 22 years old.

We at NFL Draft Diamonds extend our condolences, thoughts and prayers to the family, teammates and friends of Andre Seldon, Jr.
