KENDRICK — Crews continue to battle the Texas Fire, burning east of Kendrick on the border of Latah and Nez Perce County.

According to a Saturday morning update from officials, the fire has reached 1,575 acres and is still 10% contained. The burn area has grown by only 32 acres in the past 48 hours. By 9:38 a.m. Saturday morning, all evacuations had been lifted and all roads reopened.

According to the Idaho Department of Lands’ latest update on building damage, four primary residences and six outbuildings were lost to the fire.

On Friday, officials reported that firefighters had manually cordoned off the entire perimeter of a fire east of the main fire area.

Cleanup efforts continue around the perimeter of the fire, with crews moving as far as 200 feet in to check for smoking debris or hot spots, such as ash pockets or smoldering roots. Aircraft were not deployed to the fire Friday because firefighters on the ground had not requested air support, officials said.

On Saturday, officials said firefighters will focus on removing and mitigating hazards to ensure public safety in the fire area. Crews are cutting down trees near private property and along steeper sections of major roads.

Sprinklers are installed and used to safely and effectively cool areas that are difficult for firefighters to reach, such as areas with dense brush or areas with hazardous situations.

Availability of water in the form of engines, water tenders, hoses and portable water tanks is essential for firefighters to effectively extinguish persistent hot spots where the edge of the fire is touching the constructed fire line and interior. Due to today’s higher temperatures, firefighters will be looking for and addressing hot spots during cooler parts of the day and later in the day when temperatures are highest, watching for noticeable fire activity.

On Wednesday morning, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that federal funds have been made available to cover the costs of Texas firefighting operations.

The state of Idaho’s request for a federal Fire Management Assistance Grant was approved Tuesday night by FEMA Region 10 Administrator Willie G. Nunn. “He determined that the Texas Fire threatened to cause enough devastation to constitute a major disaster,” according to a FEMA press release. This is the first grant approved in 2024 to help fight wildfires in Idaho.

At the time of the state’s request, officials said the wildfire was threatening homes in and around Kendrick. The fire also threatened several cell towers, radio towers, private transmission lines and agricultural assets in the area.

Idaho Department of Lands firefighters began an aggressive attack Monday on the Potlatch River Canyon wildfire near the intersection of Texas Ridge Road and Cedar Ridge Road. Texas Ridge and East Road were closed to the public Monday evening.
