Kamala Harris holds fundraiser on Cape Cod despite calls for Biden to withdraw

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. — Vice President Harris was in attendance a sold-out campaign fundraiser on Cape Cod on Saturday amid growing calls for President Biden to step down as his party’s presidential nominee for the 2024 election.

About 37 Democrats in Congress have called on Biden to withdraw from the 2024 race, and several have called on the president to pass the torch to Harris. Biden has stepped off the campaign trail after being diagnosed with COVID earlier this week, and the window for the Democratic Party to consider a new nominee ahead of the party’s national convention is narrowing.

Since the night of his stuttering debate performance last month, the Vice President has repeatedly defended Biden, insisting he is the party’s nominee and encouraging others to “fight for him.”

As the presumptive heir to the nomination if the president were to step aside, Harris would need to quickly shore up support from voters and donors if Biden drops out of the race. At Saturday’s event, Harris struck a similar tone of optimism for the campaign and support for the president.

“I am a firsthand witness,” she said, raising her hands. “Every decision (Biden) makes in the White House, I think he thinks about the impact it’s going to have on everyday working Americans.”

“We’re going to win,” Harris declared to huge applause. “It’s not going to be easy. … It takes believing in something and going for it.”

Harris also criticized former President Donald Trump’s attempt to deliver a message of “unity” at the Republican Party convention — a word used on both sides of the political spectrum after the attempted assassination of him last weekend.

“If you claim to stand for unity, you have to know that it is more than just a word,” Harris said.

Tickets for Harris’s event in Provincetown — a long-standing hub for artists on Cape Cod that’s a popular beach destination for the LGBTQ community — ranged from $150 to $150,000. The fundraiser, hosted by event planner Bryan Rafanelli, was announced ahead of the presidential debate late last month.

Harris spoke of how her parents took her to marches for “freedom and equality. Not for some, but for all,” she said. “So when it comes to the fight for LGBTQ rights, I know that it’s just as much a fundamental fight for freedom.”

Harris also warned guests that if Trump wins in November, “he will once again implement policies that target the LGBTQ community.” She added that Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), “will undoubtedly leave his mark” on Trump’s “extremist anti-LGBTQ agenda.”

Rafanelli said more than 1,000 people attended and more than $2 million was raised

“In 2012, we fought for our marriages to be recognized and it was Joe Biden who listened to our voices and stood up for our community,” Rafanelli said at Saturday’s event. “Let me be clear, if we don’t win this election, we’re fighting for much more than just same-sex marriage. We’re fighting for our right to exist.”

He added that Harris “is not just a politician, she is a pioneer, a symbol of progress…(she) has consistently fought for the LGBT community.”

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and actress Jennifer Coolidge were among those in attendance at the event.

As she was leaving, a reporter shouted out a question asking if the president was “okay.” She gave her a thumbs up.
