Sandra Bullock Names Her All-Time Favorite Comedy Writer

After making her acting debut in the 1987 thriller ExecutionersSandra Bullock set out to become one of Hollywood’s most visible stars, and before the 20th century was over, the Virginia-born actress had achieved her goal with acclaimed performances in the likes of Demolition man, Speed And A time to kill.

There is a brilliant diversity and range to Bullock’s talents and she has shown time and again that she is capable of portraying characters in a wide variety of film roles, whether it be horror films or Birdhousethe science fiction drama of Gravity or in her previously mentioned, more action-oriented efforts.

But aside from her more dramatic and action-oriented roles, there was one point when Bullock was a sought-after role in the romantic comedy world, starting with her role in Donald Petrie’s 2000 film Mrs. Coziness. Bullock next appeared in the film’s 2005 sequel, Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fantastic.

Both films were written by Marc Lawrence, who is best known for his collaborations with both Bullock and Hugh Grant. In 2002, the trio reunited for Lawrence’s directed film Two weeks in advancein which Bullocks played an optimistic, liberal lawyer who goes to work for a chauvinistic billionaire real estate developer.

Speaking with the BBC On why she was drawn to working with Lawrence on so many romantic comedies, Bullock once explained why Two weeks in advance felt good to do. “I think romantic comedies in general tend to take one person’s point of view, but every once in a while you get something that’s balanced for two people,” she said.

According to the actor, there was “plenty of friction and fun” between her and Grant, who were both “happy with their lines and what they were allowed to do.” The core of her motivations for writing another rom-com was Lawrence herself, with Bullock noting, “Marc is a brilliant writer and terribly funny. He just knows how to write great characters and make them work.”

Two weeks in advance was Lawrence’s first time directing, but fortunately he had experience working with Bullock on Mrs. Cozinessso he knew he had a good colleague to lean on and understand. “I’ve worked with Sandy before, so it was really easy,” the director admitted. “She likes to get to the point faster. She’d say, ‘Just tell me what you want me to say.’ She wants everything to go fast.”

Bullock wasn’t the only one raving about Lawrence and his ability to write really funny romantic comedies, as Grant was also on hand to pass judgement. “Marc came up with this great idea,” the British actor said. “I personally believe Marc is one of the two people in the world who can write really good romantic comedies.”

Elsewhere, Lawrence directed the comedy films Music and lyrics, Have you heard about the Morgans?, The rewrite And Noelle. While Sandra Bullock has proven to have many aces up her sleeve, at one point she was the queen of the romantic comedy, specifically that of Marc Lawrence. “You always hope that a writer will come along and give you all the elements and set it up, and that’s why Marc and I have worked together three times; he makes it work,” Bullock concluded her impressions of the “terribly funny” writer and director.
