Three observations after Guardians’ 7-0 loss to Padres

The Cleveland Guardians lost their second game of the All-Star Break as the San Diego Padres offense got going, 7-0.

Here are three key lessons and observations from Cleveland’s loss.

Gavin Williams made his fourth start of the season on Friday night as he looks to play a crucial role in Cleveland’s second-half success. That will have to wait, however, as he made an unplanned early exit on Saturday.

Williams looked solid the first time through San Diego’s batting order, but struggled with his control the second time he faced the Padres’ hitters. He gave up four hits and walked three batters the second time around, and two of those walks came with the bases loaded.

For Williams to lose control like this is unusual for the right-handed pitcher, but the Padres certainly took advantage.

This start should only encourage management to sign a pitcher before the transfer deadline.

Guardians-Padres may be an interleague matchup, but Cleveland is very familiar with it Dylan quits back to his time with the Chicago White Sox.

Cease has always pitched well against Cleveland, and that was the case again Saturday. The San Deigo starter threw 7.0 innings, gave up just one hit, gave up just one hit and struck out 10 batters. Cease’s best pitch was his slider, which he made nine swings and misses.

Cease deserves all the credit for being a great game, but whatever the Guardians had planned, it clearly didn’t work.

The Guardians going down a multi-inning reliever and the offense struggling is not surprising in itself. However, who Stephen Vogt decided to go up the hill, does raise some questions for the near future.

Spencer Howard was expected to be Cleveland’s starting pitcher for Tuesday’s game before tonight’s game. Howeared pitched the final two innings for the Guardians, throwing 46 pitches. Even if he didn’t give up any runs, it would be hard to imagine him starting a game three days after coming out of the bullpen.

Cleveland will likely need a pitcher early next week.
