New York stops FC Cincinnati’s Road Run

FC Cincinnati

July 20, 2024 – Major League Soccer (MLS)
FC Cincinnati Press Release

FC Cincinnati lost 3-1 to the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night at the Red Bull Arena. The Orange and Blue (15-7-3, 48 points) remain second in the Eastern Conference, five points behind Inter Miami CF, while New York (10-4-11, 41 points) retains fourth place.

The Orange-Blues’ record streak of seven away games in MLS was broken, with the Red Bulls becoming the only MLS club to remain undefeated at home this year.

New York’s leading scorer Lewis Morgan opened the scoring in the match with his 11th goal of the season. Kyle Duncan scored his first goal of the year from distance in the 52nd minute before Morgan scored twice in the 59th minute.

Corey Baird, who came on for Kevin Kelsy in the 60th minute, pulled one back for the Oranje-Blues in the 67th minute, his second of the year. Substitutes Aaron Boupendza and Luciano ‘Lucho’ Acosta provided the assists for the goal.

AS IT HAPPENED

RBNY: Lewis Morgan, GOAL – 7′ (1-0) – New York broke Cincinnati’s pressure in their own area with a long ball from defender Dylan Nealis. Elias Manoel took possession and galloped down the left side, pressuring Cincinnati’s penalty area. Lewis Morgan, making a long run up the middle of the field, received a pass across the penalty area from Manoel and scored with a precise finish.

RBNY: Kyle Duncan, GOAL – 52′ (2-0) – A Nealis shot into the Cincinnati penalty area led to the goal after the Orange-Blue cleared the initial threat, but not as far as Kyle Duncan, who controlled a long-range shot and scored.

RBNY: Lewis Morgan, GOAL – 59′ (3-0) – Morgan was in the right place at the right time when a New York attack ended with a cross into the penalty area from Dennis Gjengaar. Wikelman Carmona headed in the first attempt and it was Morgan who was first to bite with a flicked shot from close range.

CIN: Corey Baird, GOAL – 67′ (3-1) – Yuya Kubo looked for options after winning possession on the left. Kubo cut inside with his right foot and played a cross into the box to Luciano Acosta, who controlled the pass with his chest and laid it off to Aaron Boupendza who entered the box. Boupendza’s first touch cleared a New York defender and bounced back to Corey Baird who rounded Carlos Coronel. After the move was initially ruled offside, VAR ruled Baird offside.

FC Cincinnati will pause regular MLS play to begin the Leagues Cup group stage against Mexico’s Club Querétaro on Thursday, August 1. Kickoff from TQL Stadium is set for 8 p.m. ET and tickets are still available at FCCincinnati.com/Tickets or by calling (513) 977-5425 (KICK).
