Darkness halts men’s State Am; tournament ends Sunday with third playoff hole

LAUREL — The 107th Montana Men’s State Amateur Championship was forced to go into a fourth day due to darkness after two playoff holes on Saturday were not enough to determine a winner at Laurel Golf Club.

Nathan Bailey and Liam Clancy are tied for the top spot going into Sunday’s No. 18 hole in what will be the third playoff hole of the third and final round. Bailey and Clancy both made par on Nos. 10 and 18 on Saturday before a lack of sunlight forced a postponement.

Clancy shot 68 after 18 holes on Saturday, forcing a tie with Bailey, who shot 73. Both had a score of 212 after three rounds.

Clancy is a graduate of Billings Central. Bailey is a Laurel High alum and now the head golf coach at Rocky Mountain College. Bailey won three straight State Ams from 2010-12 and was runner-up to Billings’ Joey Moore last year after a playoff decided the champion at Old Works in Anaconda.
