South Burlington stars play hero roles in victories

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Yaniv Bazini broke a scoreless tie with a dramatic 93rd-minute winner Tuesday night at Virtue Field to send Vermont Green past Reading United and into the USL2 round of 32. The game was delayed for about a half-hour after storms moved through the area and the ongoing downpour appeared to have an effect on the game. Vermont missed a couple of good chances when Jaheim Wickham was called upon to make a difficult save before halftime. After a couple of crucial saves from Kieran Brown for the visitors to keep this game level, Reading took the initiative. Wickham made a dramatic recovery to avoid a potential foul before hitting another goal. The game seemed destined for overtime, but in the third minute of four of stoppage time, Nathan Simeon sent a cross into the penalty area and Bazini headed in the winning goal to send the capacity crowd at Virtue into raptures. “Well, I know I needed the whole game to win my fight, and it’s just going to be this one time that I get the ball on my head,” Bazini said after the game. “And this was the only one, so I’m glad I put it in!” It was a huge birthday present for the UVM star and VGFC’s all-time leading scorer. “Not just for me, for these fans!” he said. “That’s awesome, to celebrate a birthday like that, to score, to advance to the next round.” Vermont now faces a trip to Ocean City, New Jersey. VGFC will face a familiar opponent when they take on the Long Island Rough Riders on Friday at 5 p.m. Long Island defeated VGFC in the round of 16 of the 2022 USL2 playoffs.
