Nashville, Knoxville and Memphis rank high on the list of best hospitals in Tennessee

On July 16, U.S. News & World Report released its annual rankings and ratings of the nation’s best hospitals. One of its hospitals, located in Knoxville, was high on the list for Tennessee.

Local hospitals were ranked nationally in individual specialties, earning “high performing” designations for procedures such as aortic valve surgery, lung cancer surgery and spinal fusion. Many hospitals received Best Hospital designations, but none of the city’s hospitals landed on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll, which U.S. News & World Report describes as “the best of the best.”

“For 35 years, U.S. News has been a leading resource for patients making health care decisions,” Ben Harder, U.S. News’ chief of health analysis, said in a statement. “A ‘Best Hospital’ designation empowers patients to seek medical care from the best of the best to treat their disease or condition.”

Here’s how Nashville hospitals compare to each other and the rest of the state:

No. 1: Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville

Vanderbilt University Medical Center earned the coveted spot as the best hospital in the state. The hospital was nationally ranked in seven adult specialties and 10 pediatric specialties.

U.S. News & World Report also awarded VUMC “high performing” ratings for 19 procedures and conditions. VUMC was ranked in the top 10% nationwide for neurology, cancer and geriatrics. It also ranked No. 34 nationwide for cardiology, No. 36 for diabetes and endocrinology and No. 9 for ear, nose and throat.

No. 2: Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis

Memphis’ Baptist Memorial Hospital won silver as the second-best hospital in Tennessee. The hospital earned “high performing” points for 14 procedures and conditions, including bypass surgery, transcatheter aortic valve surgery, colon cancer surgery, kidney failure and stroke.

However, charity care for uninsured patients is lower than other hospitals in the state, and Baptist does not offer maternity care or addiction treatment.

Tie for No. 3: Methodist Hospital of Memphis and University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville

The Methodist Hospital of Memphis and the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville tied for third place.

Methodist is nationally ranked in five pediatric specialties, such as neonatology, and has achieved a “high performing” rating in 11 procedures and conditions. Meanwhile, the University of Tennessee Medical Center is not nationally ranked in any specialty, but is “high performing” in 12 procedures and conditions, including leukemia, lung cancer, prostate cancer and stroke.

No. 5: CHI Memorial Hospital, Chattanooga

CHI Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga took the final spot in the top five with a “high performing” rating for 11 adult procedures and conditions.

CHI’s top-rated procedures include lung cancer surgery, bypass surgery, hip replacement, and knee replacement. U.S. News also gave CHI an “excellent” rating for minimal racial disparities in outcomes, particularly for knee replacement, hip replacement, and back surgery.

No. 6: Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital, Nashville

Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville earned sixth place with a “high performance” rating for 10 procedures and conditions, including aortic valve surgery, heart attack, heart failure, hip replacement and knee replacement.

Like the other hospitals on this list, Ascension Saint Thomas received the “Best Hospital” award.
