Here’s what’s happening this week in the Chattanooga area.

Good to know

Parents in Tennessee and Alabama are stricter than the national average when monitoring their children’s social-media use, according to a recent survey by HostingAdvice. The survey of 3,000 parents was meant to shed light on the extent of parental controls on the websites and apps their children access. According to the survey, over half of Tennessee parents (53%) and even more Alabama parents (55%) actively control the websites and social-media sites their children visit, compared to a national average of 52%. Georgia parents fell below the national average at 49%. Parents reported multiple methods of controlling their children’s online habits, including checking the browser history, using parental control software, discussing online behavior with their children and occasionally restricting access. The highest parental diligence was reported in Arizona, Montana, Nebraska and New Hampshire (67%). The lowest was South Dakota (20%). The U.S. Surgeon General recently called on Congress to mandate labeling on social-media apps, akin to the warnings on cigarettes and alcohol, to address digital concerns for children.
