Eating in New York City: Restaurant owners face new outdoor dining rules, must apply for street and sidewalk seating

NEW YORK (WABC) — New York City’s outdoor dining program is set to begin next month with new rules, and restaurant owners are scrambling to prepare.

Starting in August, businesses must register for “Dining Outside NYC” by the end of the day on August 3.

For a roadside or sidewalk cafe there is a flat registration fee of $1,500.

Owners have the option to pay $2,100 for both outdoor dining options.

Outdoor dining sheds first became popular during the pandemic.

Officials say the revised requirements will ensure it becomes a permanent part of the streetscape.
