It goes without saying that, as the Detroit News reports, security will be beefed up for the event, given the Secret Service’s failure to protect the former president last Saturday:

Former President Donald Trump returns to Grand Rapids on Saturday, where security is expected to be beefed up for his first rally after a gunman tried to kill the New York businessman at an outdoor campaign event in Pennsylvania.

Trump is expected to take the stage at the Van Andel Arena on Saturday evening, along with his newly minted vice presidential nominee, Senator JD Vance of Ohio.

The U.S. Secret Service declined to provide details about what staffing or procedural changes would be implemented following last weekend’s shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, but did say the federal agency would work with local and state police “to ensure a safe and secure environment” for the former president, the vice presidential nominee and those in attendance.

“We are constantly evaluating security and if we see a need to change our posture, we absolutely will,” said Doug Zloto, special agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service’s Detroit Field Office.
