PUTNAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Interstate 40 East in Putnam County is down to one lane following an officer-involved shooting near mile marker 288 just outside of Cookeville.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol sent a message to X that they were “actively searching for two black males with facial tattoos driving a white Kia Forte.” The possible Tennessee temporary license plate reads Q9SC4JR.

A Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) commissioner told News 2 that early details indicate the shooting occurred during a traffic stop. The officer was initially treated at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. The officer has since been flown to a Nashville hospital. The THP message to X said the officer was in stable condition at the time of publication.

District Attorney Bryant Dunaway confirmed that the officer who was shot was a Cookeville County Sheriff’s Office officer. Authorities said the injury did not appear to be life-threatening. THP is reviewing the footage to try to get more details.
