BURLINGTON, NC (WGHP) — A woman was shot and killed by her estranged husband in Burlington on Friday, before the husband committed suicide, according to a news release from the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 7:12 a.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired on Beaver Creek Road in southwestern Alamance County.

Arriving officers found the body of a female victim who had been shot. The body was identified as Lourdes Vega.

Her body was found in a nearby house, after which she fled to escape the shooting.

Witnesses identified the shooter as her estranged husband, Victor Vega.

After the shooting, witnesses said Victor returned to the home on Beaver Creek Road where he had previously lived with Lourdes.

Officers didn’t know where Victor was, so they called in the Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team and drones to search for him.

He was found in a detached garage on the property with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At the time of their separation, he lived in an apartment in Burlington.

The investigation is still ongoing.
