CFL: Obsidian green jerseys are a hit with Rider fans

The latest changes to the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ wardrobe are quickly becoming popular with their fans.

Obsidian Green, as it’s called, is a dark shade of green that the Roughriders will wear for the first time Friday night at Mosaic Stadium. Along with the new color, they’ll also sport a new logo.

In the lead up to the game, The Rider Store at Mosaic Stadium was a busy place. It was reported that fans were lining up outside the store before it even opened, eager to get their hands on merchandise.

“I really like it, the color is great. It’s nice to have something different,” said one fan about the new shirts.

“They keep the same style, as long as they have the “S” on it and the wheat. They keep it green and we’re doing well,” said another fan from out of state.

Not only the fans are charmed by the new look, the Rider players have also given their opinion about the new uniforms.

“I’m excited. The darkest green possible is what they say, I love it,” Riders linebacker Jameer Thurman said.

The new look was launched in May, but plans for the new color and logo go back years.

“This one took longer, about five and a half years. We really felt it was important to get his obsidian green right and once we did that, it all came together really quickly,” said Mark Hibicht, the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ director of retail operations.

The debut game of the new uniforms will take place against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, with a kickoff time of 7:30 p.m.

The Riders will wear the uniforms again later in the regular season.
